Rudolf Steiner uses the word double in two senses: a person's own nature met as a figure on the path to the spiritual world, and an ahrimanic being that dwells in the body from shortly before birth to shortly before death. Each heading after the first keeps to one sense, or to a related use its scope names. Texts calling the etheric body a double are not listed. A text that foresees a Mephistophelian second being without the word double has its own heading.

usage. This entry lists where Rudolf Steiner's collected works (the Gesamtausgabe, GA) treat the subject. It contains no quotations: the headings, scope lines and notes are this index's wording, not Steiner's. The greater guardian is never the double, and the mystery dramas show the guardian beside the double (GA 14, The Soul's Awakening, scene 4); Ahriman, the cosmic being, who gives the double its shape; the double of the 1917 lectures is one of many ahrimanic beings, not Ahriman himself (GA 147 of 30 August 1913; GA 178 of 16 November 1917); the etheric body, which the early lectures, in the theosophical usage, call the etheric double or a kind of double of the physical body (GA 52 of 7 March 1904); the other self, the higher self Johannes Thomasius approaches in the mystery dramas, on the way to which his double and the Spirit of his youth appear (GA 147 of 30 August 1913).
